How to Diapos/Slides/Presentación?

Siempre es cuestión romperse la cabeza en cómo hacer una buena presentación (dispositiva/slides). Hacerlo en Power Point, en KeyNote, Latex, Impress? En cuál? Sin embargo eso es una de las cosas que deberían decidirse más si aún no estás seguro de la manera en que debes hacer las diapositivas.

De aquí en adelante presento una traducción de Guidelines for Creating Presentations y comentarios propios. El artículo tiene un énfasis en Latex, sin embargo me parece la menor preocupación. Los consejos son de lo mejor y de seguro que muchos de nosotros ya hemos metido la pata haciendo algo que la presente guía indica como tarjeta roja.

Vamos a ver como hacer, por lo menos en esta primera entrada de blog sobre el tema, Cómo estructurar la presentación de modo global.

Las restricciones:

* Lo primero que cuando uno crea una presentación es sobre el tiempo. Dependiendo de la ocasión y contexto, es posible tener solo dos minutos o dos horas enteras.
* La regla más simple indica tener un slide por minuto, a mi parecer una velocidad que puede variar dependiendo del énfasis en alguna explicación.
* Por alguna mágica razón siempre vas a tener menos tiempo para exponer del que te gustaría (también menos gente interasada en la exposición de lo que pensaste), así que prepárate.
* Nunca, jamás! Intentes poner más de lo que es importante saber en la presentación. El explicar en detalle puede que te parezca divertido para ti, por lo general los que escuchan quieren una visión general, una idea del porque deberían esuchar. Aparte te vas a ahorrar tiempo haciendo menos slides. Piensa primero.

La estructura global

Para poder hacer un bosquejo de la estructura de tu presentación en base a las restricciones que vas a tener, es recomendable seguir esto:

* Haz un inventario mental de las cosas de las cosas que razonablemente podrías hablar en el tiempo disponible. Hazlo!
* Categoriza ese inventario.
* Para una exposición larga, algo de mas de una hora por ejemplo, es mejor dividir la charla en partes independientes. Cada una con un contenido como cuerpo.
* Debes sentirte dueno de tu presentación, cámbiala a tu antojo, agrande, reduce partes.
* Si tienes una presentación no extensa, no utilices más de 4 o 5 secciones. La gente se olvida.
* La tabla de secciones, esa que siempre se pasa rápido. Es uno de los factores que te ayudan a hacer que quienes escuchan sepan de lo que les va a habla y de que cosa no. Si tiene algo interesante ese es el momento preciso. Así capturas la atención.
* Los títulos y subtítulos de las diapos, no deben ser solo para que tu los entiendas. Por ningún motivo coloques un título de 10 palabras. Eso ya es una oración que la puedes hablar.
* Los títulos deben explicarse por sí solos y obviamente un título tras otro deben tener secuencia lógica.
* Comienza con una pequena resena de tu trabajo. No asumas que todo el mundo sabe de lo que hablas. La Ley de la Audiencia Ingnorante: alguien imporante en la audiencia sabe menos que tú. Tómalo en cuenta.
* Cuéntales la razón por la cual están sentados escuchandote. Que piensas de tu mismo trabajo. No digas ni feo ni bonito. interesante puede ser, sería mejor si dices Mi trabajo está resolviendo un problema de una manera eficiente (o por lo menos eso crees).
* Siempre concluye la exposición con un breve resumen y el tema principal de lo que hablaste. Por lo general al final de exposición la gente empieza a moverse, hablar en voz baja, o arreglarse la ropa, habla sintiendote satisfecho del trabajo, así les transmites lo mismo. La gente le da más atención al inicio que al fin.
* Si sabes que van a haber preguntas (uno siempre lo sabe, o por lo menos debería), coloca apéndice o ten material a la mano. Nunca sabes cuando aparece el preguntón.
* Nunca, jamás utilices el nivel tres de las vinetas o sangria. Desordena todo el slide. Aparte las letras pequenisismas. Eso sí es feo.
* En un paper colocas un abstract, pero en unos slides es mejor un par de oraciones. Just that.
* Jamás, nunca coloques el abstract del paper en las diapositivas a menos que sea el asbtract de "Demostracion de P=NP" o "Demostracion de P es diferente de NP"
* Si tu abstract es uno de esos, revisa de nuevo la demostración.
* No deberías colocar teoremas o definiciones demasiado formales en los slides. Si bien son necesarias muchas veces, sólo y solo esas veces deben estar presente. El que pone más fórmulas o definciones no es aquél que sabe todo.
* Nunca, jamás digas por el Teorema 2.5 que acabo de mostra... Nadie sabe los número de la estrucutura de tu presentación. Por último es poco probable que una presentación corta hayan entendio del todo el teorema.
* Es muy, terrible, pésima idea colocar toda la bibligrafía que usaste en tus slides. Si vas a hacerlo, piensa en sólo poner lo que vas a comentar y que sea bien bien bien ... interesante. No es muy atractiva la idea de hablarles de los libros que leíste a toda la audiencia. Obviamente la bibliografía del paper tal y como está ahi, esta prohibida.

Es posible decir que con PowerPoint se hacen mejores diapositivas cuando hablas de ciencia. Y es en parte cierto, debido a que con Latex puedes colocar formulas y símbolos a tu antojo, es probable que abuses de ellos. Así que siempre cuidado con ello.

Aún no conversé sobre los efectos, o el tipo de escrita o cuantas palabras por slide. Eso en un próximo post.

Buil dvi/pdf latex with bibtex by using a script

It's millions of times better to build a latex output file with a single script that using the options of the editor.

Create a sh. file. For instance, a do.sh file, and write this on it:

latex myproyect
bibtex myproyect
latex myproyect
latex myproyect

and ready!

If you want a pdf and not a dvi file, just add this line:

dvipdf myproyect

If now you want to automatically visualize the output, I mean just by running the script add this:

evince myproyect.pdf

Well, there are a couple of restriction here. First of all, I am using linux, so the this file wont be useful in win. The second, as a consequence of using linux I have the evince program to visualize pdf, dvi, ps files. If you are using linux and want to change the visualizer program, just chane evince, for your own program.

Then go to your source files location, and write ./do.sh

That's all!

Accents in Texmaker / Acentos en Texmaker

Algo bastante frustrante cuando se abre un archivo .tex con Texmaker, es darse con la sorpresa de encontrar los caracteres especiales como símbolos ilegibles. Ni por un momento me pondría a pensar reescribir todo...!

La solución es, antes de abrir el archivo, ir al menú Options> Configure Texmaker y en la ventana que se despliega ir a la sección Editor y en la opción Editor Font Encoding, cambiar la opción de System por ISO-8859-1 y ahora abrir el archivo. Puede darse el caso contrario que estando en ISO-8859-1 no se vean los caracteres porque escribiste y grabaste el .tex en el formato System (Default), solo haz al revés y también solucionas el problema. Aquí un pantallazo:

Leave-one-out cross-validation is used in the field of machine learning to determine how accurately a learning algorithm will be able to predict data that it was not trained on. When using the leave-one-out method, the learning algorithm is trained multiple times, using all but one of the training set data points. The form of the algorithm is as follows:

For k = 1 to R (where R is the number of training set points)

Temporarily remove the k^th data point from the training set.
Train the learning algorithm on the remaining R - 1 points.
Test the removed data point and note your error.

Calculate the mean error over all R data points.

Leave-one-out cross validation is useful because it does not waste data. When training, all but one of the points are used, so the resulting regression or classification rules are essentially the same as if they had been trained on all the data points. The main drawback to the leave-one-out method is that it is expensive - the computation must be repeated as many times as there are training set data points.

error while loading shared libraries: libppm.so

I was using a medical image display software and I was getting this annoying mistake:

./Display: error while loading shared libraries: libppm.so.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

However looking for this package in synaptic, I couldn't install it. I found a solution on this site https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/yelp/+question/35866, just:

$ sudo apt-get install libnetpbm9

Dando vueltas por el Internet, me topé con este video que de una manera más que didática y gracias a los atributos de la maestra, se puede aprender fácilmente de dónde vino la palabra del buscador Google.

El video tiene el título de "Google was a mistake or I 10 duotrigintillioned you!" Recomiendo el video para que entretengan la vista, obviamente también para que aprendan el origen de tan mentada palabra.

This warning is so annoying. It really bothers me when I compile a VTK-based file. The solution is, - I am getting for granted you already know the compilation process.

a) Open ccmake .
b) Enter "g" to activate the complete mode and fill the CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS with -Wno-deprecated.

Well, Christmas is really close and people at the job thaugh it would be a good idea to play Secret Santa. I have no idea of who is going to give a gift this 23rd, but if he/she read this post, I hope he/she can follow these suggestions.

I have recently moved, so I am organazing my bedroom. I would like a lava lamp or a nice watch for an empty wall :)

What else...?! I am going to recieve my motocylce driver licence so I will need a helmet, a gray one would be excellent because my motorcycle is gray... or maybe a green one, I like green very much.

A nice usb key memory, 'cause the one I have is an mp4 player and it is not a good device for work. There are cheap ones, or one on ebay :D

I've heard a lot of times that through eyes you can see the soul. Maybe it's real or not. Why just see it? If through a smile you can feel it, love it, live it.

A smile can make me feel the happier as depressed when it is not here. A smile can kill me of love by just seeing it or make me live in sadness when it is gone.

Not every smile can transmit all, just a few few, just one what want to. Since half decade I found what I looked for, what I dreamt, what now I have. Every day I ask to see appearing and I beg not to loose what I must protect.

Wrong name

Yesterday I saw on my dinner table a Cd, it was not a music or movie one; it was a documentary. There is no problem with this kind of material; however what I consider too much ego it is to deliver a CD with your own tv report. I can't claim that this kind of ideas come up front the star, but I wouldn't be impossible.

Well... I talking about our dear Major, who is the owner of the César Vallejo University. I dont know what it is the problem about his personality or the people who manage his public image. Whoever does this wants to introduce Acuña in our minds. I ask some people about the university, I ask if there are some pcitures, scultures, or that stuff related to Vallejo. I got really surprised when the majority of them have not seen a single photo of him. However, what are always on the walls are pictures of.... guess!!!, try hard!!! don't give up!!! YES YES... who else could be. César!

A quick conclussion, we could definetly change the name of his university to UCA(look at the picture). It is not a big change, jus turn the "V" up, and voilá!

El peruano estúpido. Lolazo

Escribiré esto en español, debido a que será puede ser más fácilmente comprendido.

Érase ya cinco años cuando empezó la fiebre del Gunbound. No había chibolo de 12 años que no sabía que es la Oruguita o Boomerang (aún cuando no sabían como se escriba esta palabra). No hay problema por la alienación ni nada, si algo es pegajoso y no hace daño, no veo malestar.

Avanzadas las creaciones de clanes, pseudopiratas, creación de cuentas fantasma y muchos otros; el lenguaje gringo se tenía que pegar (antes del Gunbound LA). Aparte de afanar a las Pollitas (no es peyorativo, el nivel inicial es Pollito y una mujer sería su femenino), la jerigonza muy melosa se tenía que estampar en los ojos de todos. Así pues, americanos y compañía se vacilaban de lo lindo diciendo lol.

Lol, como lo cita berksworlds, es Laughing Out Loud. Expresión anglosajona cuyo significado es "Riendo a carcajadas". Es una versión en inglés del dibujo :-). Ahora de dónde se ocurrió decir: lolón, lola, lolazo?!? El peruano estúpido, copia y encima copia mal. Por lo menos debe usar la frase correctamente, de ser lolazo, es decir lol en grado mayúsculo, sería una buena y resonante carcajada. Sin embargo, es común: eres un lolazo mongol!, qué lol!, fallaste lolón!, pollo lol! Es decir, hicimos un nuevo adjetivo, que podría ser: tonto, gafo, mongol o peruano sonso(solo por acá existe eso). Y qué bueno que hubiese quedado en el jueguecito ese, por el contrario, por el messenger, era comida de cada día. Copiemos algo, pero bien! Somos estúpidos o no?

I heard about this site when I was in English classes. My teacher, Mr. David White, told us to look up for www.freerice.com. We al though it was some kind of game or reading practice, instead it was a cool site in order to learn and help.

This site gives you the opportunity to improve your vocabulary by answering synonym based question. You are scored and each time you fail it decreases. When you get a high average, it is shown in the screen.

However, how can you help? You could not believe it. With a correct answer you are donating 20 grains of rices to poor people. Obviously you are not asked to give the rice, an organization is the mediator through government in order to have the rice.

What is it worse, being lied or non informed?

Lying. You claim something is real when is not. We have a lot of examples. You look somebody and tell him what he wants to listen making a distortion of the reality. Also you can change some little details in order to produce a new history or just tell one part of it. What else... you can answer a question with another kind of question or a weird answer. One electronic, you forward an email changing the content. Obviously: etc...

Non informed. You let people to say, do, think or act without knowing the facts you know. A bunch of example too. You get some piece of information and then close your mouth with a digital lock. Another, you start running away thinking you can avoid your buddies. You use the magical answer: I don't know. You don't answer calls or mails. You get more information and you take more security measures with your mouth. Obviously & Obviously: etc.

This photo is more real than you can imagine. The name of the star will be reserved in order to protect his honorable reputation and do not produce any disorder in his wide and so academic resume as a Principal Professor in some university in the north of Perú (not Tumbes, nor Piura, nor Lambayeque), in an indeterminate school (not Physics, nor Math, nor Computing), in the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

This plural, reasonable, hard-working, with an awesome degree (not PhD/Dr, nor MsC/Mg, nor with a post doctoral), has been unfairly criticize for some stupyd students for his role as President in a public teacher competition. All this becuase he had a different opinion and extremely low calification for some contestant who got high grades from the other members of the jury. Oh my God! These kind of students must be burned in hell.

However what do you think he is doing? a) He was pointing to the roof b) He was reading without seeing the book (with all his abilities maybe he can do this) c)He is showing how César Vallejo pose for photos... Tell me why!

A fair punishment?

She is definetly not a young example, but she is not a terrorist. Opinions are divided between supporting the punishment on the basis that this is a good example of justice application. The opposite group sustained that two years in prision are too much for a simple agression.

What I think it's that both groups have conciliating ideas. Angie is a 28-years-old woman, but she perfoms in front of younger people, the majority of them are teenagers. As you can see, she represents a public image and a following model for teen people. Obviously parents couldn't allow that their children act the way she did, so a punishment as a response to her actions becomes an example for their kids.

She is not a terrorist or something like that, she has only fight with some woman and not to attend to the constant citations of the judge. Moreover she has formal recommendations and restrictions for her behavior. I say only, because in this country this is so common and just a few group of people have recieved this kind of punishment.

Well... it's up to you.

Here is my little cousin. With her five years old she a complete model!!!

She is Astrid and she is a lovely child. She is currently in the first year of elementary school. Despite her short age she has an amazing resumé, Perucita (the way his aunt call her) had won several beauty contest in kindergarden. She has also been selected for the role of the "beauty" in "The Beauty and the Beast" played in her kinder.

If someone would give me a new jacket, I would really appreciate it 'cuase I need it, but what about moms? Do they really need blenders all the time? You can give her an appliance as a gift but it's a message behind. Continue working!

With this new concept we must start thinking about a new gift. Maybe a cell phone... or a day in a spa. I believe it will send a differente message.

We have to think about what is the most relaxing for a mom, obviously I'm talking about a housewife mom. A cooking-washing-cleaning-free day? Yes, that's it!!! Take your mom to a big cd store and buy her the old music she always likes, well... she will need a stero, so buy it too! Or the whole season of Piel de Otoño or Rosa Salvaje! Buy a DVD now... I think this photo was taken in the first semester, obviously we were working together in a group for some course.

Nowadays, these inocent faces have dramatically changed! What do you think, we are better or worse? We are now out of the university and looking for some better future work or studies.
